A Night of Surprises at the 78th British Academy Film Awards

London, xweb.biz.id – The 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) took place on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at London’s Royal Festival Hall, celebrating the best in global cinema. While no single film dominated the evening, Conclave, a gripping papal thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, emerged as the night’s big winner, taking home four awards, including Best Picture.

Meanwhile, Emilia Pérez, despite facing controversy in the lead-up to the event, proved its resilience by securing Best Film Not in the English Language, along with Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña. The Brutalist matched Conclave’s award tally, with Adrien Brody winning Best Actor and Brady Corbet named Best Director.

Conclave Crowned Best Picture, Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist Score Big

Conclave, a thriller set within the Vatican during the election of a new pope, outshone strong contenders Anora, The Brutalist, Emilia Pérez, and Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown to claim the top honor. The film also won in the Outstanding British Film category and picked up trophies for Best Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Adrien Brody’s powerful portrayal of a Hungarian-Jewish architect in The Brutalist secured him Best Actor, triumphing over strong competition from Fiennes, Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Hugh Grant (Heretic), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice).

Mikey Madison took home the Best Actress award for her gripping role in Anora, a Brooklyn tragicomedy where she plays an exotic dancer entangled with a Russian oligarch’s son. Beating nominees Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Demi Moore (The Substance), Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths), Madison used her speech to advocate for sex workers.

“You deserve respect and human decency. I will always be a friend and an ally and I implore others to do the same,” she said.

Supporting Actor Wins for Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldaña

Kieran Culkin continued his awards season success by winning Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, a dramedy about two cousins exploring their family roots. Meanwhile, Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez, where she plays a lawyer aiding a transgender ex-cartel boss in escaping crime.

Saldaña called the film “the creative challenge of a lifetime” while director Jacques Audiard thanked his cast, including Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez. Gascón, who was nominated for Best Actress, did not attend amid backlash over past controversial social media posts.

Other Big Winners: Wallace & Gromit, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked

  • A Real Pain won Best Original Screenplay in addition to Culkin’s acting win. Writer-director Jesse Eisenberg humorously thanked his wife, saying, “She didn’t come because she didn’t think I’d win.”
  • Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl claimed Best Animated Feature and Best Family and Children’s Film.
  • Dune: Part Two secured victories in Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.
  • Wicked won Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

Rising Stars and Special Honors

David Jonsson, known for his roles in Industry and Rye Lane, won the Rising Star Award, the only BAFTA category decided by public vote. “Star, I don’t know,” he joked. “But rising, I guess.”

The Best British Debut award went to Rich Peppiatt, the writer-director of Kneecap, an Irish-language hip-hop drama.

A special honor, the BAFTA Fellowship, was awarded to Warwick Davis for his contributions to cinema and efforts toward inclusivity. The Star Wars actor, who founded a talent agency for actors under 5 feet tall, reflected humorously, “This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me—and I’ve been in Star Wars.”
