Jakarta, xweb.biz.id – Indonesia’s Minister of Immigration and Corrections (Imipas), Agus Andrianto, has confirmed the dismissal of 71 immigration officers at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Soetta) following allegations of bribery targeting Chinese nationals.

The action was taken in response to a diplomatic note from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, which raised concerns about extortion practices at the airport.

Speaking at a working meeting with Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (February 19, 2025), Agus revealed that 44 cases involving 60 Chinese nationals occurred between February 2024 and January 2025.

Bribery Cases Uncovered

“During this period, 44 cases were recorded involving 60 Chinese nationals, with a total of IDR 32,750,000 ($2,100) extorted from them. The money has since been returned to the victims,” Agus stated.

Following an internal investigation, authorities discovered that 39 immigration officers responsible for inspecting Chinese travelers’ documents were involved in the bribery scheme.

“Cross-referencing immigration data with the diplomatic note revealed that 39 officers engaged in bribery against 60 Chinese nationals,” he explained.

Mass Dismissals and Sanctions

To uphold integrity, 71 immigration officers from Soekarno-Hatta Airport have been dismissed, including officials at different levels:

  • 3 structural officials
  • 1 former head of immigration office
  • 1 former head of division
  • 1 active head of division
  • 5 section heads for immigration inspections
  • 23 supervisory officers
  • 40 counter officers

Additionally, the head of the Soekarno-Hatta Immigration Office has been replaced. Those dismissed are currently under investigation by the Directorate General of Internal Compliance to determine appropriate sanctions.

“The Head of Immigration at Soekarno-Hatta Airport was officially replaced on January 21. The dismissed officers are now under internal review to ensure they face the proper legal consequences,” Agus added.

Preventing Future Bribery Cases

In a bid to prevent similar incidents, the Immigration Ministry has implemented stricter automated processing systems at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

“One of our key measures is the expansion of the autogate system. Currently, 98 autogates are in operation, and the number of manual counter officers has been reduced from 50 to 15 across both arrival and departure terminals,” Agus concluded.
