Jakarta, xweb.biz.id – Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has expressed his respect for the decision made by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to detain Hasto Kristiyanto, the Secretary-General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan).

“We respect the decision made by KPK,” Yusril stated on Thursday at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta.

Government’s Non-Interference in KPK’s Process

Yusril admitted that he was not fully informed about the latest developments regarding Hasto’s detention. However, he emphasized that the government cannot intervene in the legal process carried out by the KPK. He described the KPK as an independent law enforcement body with the authority to detain and impose travel bans on individuals as part of its duties.

“The KPK is an independent state institution that has the power to detain someone or prevent someone from traveling abroad,” said Yusril.

Yusril also underlined the importance of respecting the rights of individuals in detention, including their right to defense. He stated that those who are detained can contact a lawyer to pursue legal measures ensuring the proper enforcement of justice.

“The detained person can contact their lawyer to take legal action to ensure that justice is served properly,” Yusril said.

Yusril emphasized that while the KPK has the authority to detain or declare someone a suspect, the person’s lawyer must also be given the opportunity to defend the legal interests of their client. This, he added, is where fairness and justice will ultimately be realized.

“KPK can do this, but the accused also has the right to have a lawyer defend their legal interests. From this perspective, I see the process as fair,” he stated.

Hasto Kristiyanto, a prominent politician from Yogyakarta, was taken into custody by the KPK on Thursday afternoon after his interrogation. He was seen leaving the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in handcuffs, escorted by KPK officers.

Hasto is facing charges related to a bribery case involving the substitution of a member of the House of Representatives (PAW) and obstruction of justice. KPK spokesperson Tessa Mahardhika Sugiarto emphasized that the investigation into Hasto is purely about upholding the law, without any political implications.

“For the umpteenth time, KPK reiterates that the designation of Hasto Kristiyanto as a suspect is not part of a political agenda,” Tessa stated.

The legal process surrounding Hasto Kristiyanto’s detention continues to unfold, with KPK maintaining its commitment to enforcing justice. As the case progresses, both the law enforcement bodies and Hasto’s legal representatives will play vital roles in ensuring the fair administration of justice.
